  • Goedhuis, December 2016

Etienne saved this premier cru until the end of our tasting in deference to the density and quality he perceives in the wine this year. Initially reserved this evolves to show real power and volume, all given an additional dimension by the grippy tannic intensity. This is a wine for ageing.

  • Neal Martin, December 2016, Score: 92-94

The 2015 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots has an opulent, effervescent bouquet with copious red cherries, wild strawberry, marmalade and hints of allspice that all make for a very complex and quite riveting experience. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet candied entry, like the aromatics, forward and opulent in style with a rich, dense, spicy finish that feels as much Vosne-Romanée as Nuits Saint-Georges. It will need several years in bottle, but it should be a hell of a lot of fun once ready. Drink 2020 - 2040

  • Burghound, January 2017, Score: 92-94

A pungent nose is presently composed by notes of wood and enough reduction to suppress the underlying fruit. Otherwise there is superb richness to the voluptuous medium weight plus flavors that possess a highly seductive texture thanks to the abundant dry extract that imparts a sappy mouth feel and serves to mostly buffer the very firm tannic spine on the strikingly persistent finish. Boudots is a chameleon-like terroir that can be either Nuits or Vosne in basic character; in 2015, it's more Vosne than Nuits. Sweet spot. Outstanding. Drink 2030+

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
