"Il y a deux visages," commented Aubert de Villaine, as he tasted the 2013 Romanée-Saint-Vivant, his own poetic way of observing the duality of this wine, both elegant and yet so intense. We tasted from two barrels. The first had an exquisite and very expressive bouquet with stunning tension and transparency, in my mind a clear level up from the Grands Echézeaux. The palate already has the florality and femininity of a this Grand Cru, but with the backbone one might discern in a Richebourg. The finish is extraordinarily long, while a second barrel from the warmer part of the cellar showed more opulence on the nose and even a hint of viscosity on the finish. It will be fascinating to reexamine this "Janus" once in bottle.

Here the subtly oaked nose is not only more expressive but more floral and perfumed as well with its elegant and airy array of highly spiced red currant, herbal tea and sandalwood scents. There is a silky texture to the wonderfully precise, tight, intense and vibrant medium weight flavors that possess really lovely good complexity, all wrapped in a gorgeously persistent finale. Transparent crimson. Very fragrant, showing the meatier side of red burgundy, hinting at possible gaminess to come. Fresh, crunchy redcurrant fruit in abundance. Great health and confidence. A bit more than medium weight with quite a charge of tannins. Great line. And persistence again. Drink 2028-2050

Co-owned by the Villaine and the Leroy/Roch families, this historic domaine in the Côtes de Nuits produces arguably the world’s greatest wine and has become the standard against which all others are judged. It is named after its flagship vineyard, the famous monopole La Romanee-Contée which was first planted by the monks from the Abbaye de Saint Vivant in the Middle Ages and came into the possession of the Prince of Conti in 1760 who kept the wines solely for his own private consumption. The vines were replanted in 1947 and before that remained untouched since pre-phylloxera days. The domaine acquired its other monopole, La Tâche in 1933 and also built up significant holdings in other grand cru vineyards over the 19th and 20th century such as Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux and Le Montrachet. Incredibly, all the wines produced by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti are from vineyards classified as Grand Cru, the highest designation available in Burgundy.Read less

One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Relatively large and consequently diverse for a Grand Cru, the better Echézeaux wines undoubtedly deserve this status. As always in Burgundy vineyard location and grower is critical.
