Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 87-89
The 1998 is dark ruby/purple-colored, with an elegant, sweet nose of new saddle leather, roasted herbs, and black cherry and blackberry fruit. This medium-bodied effort does not display significant weight or volume, but it offers good richness, an elegant style, moderate tannin, and a sweet finish. The wine is lacking in intensity, but it is one of St.-Estephe's finest 1998s. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2015.

Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 90-92
This is the finest offering I tasted from St.-Estephe. The tannin level has become better integrated, and the new saddle leather, steak tartare, earthy, plum, black cherry aromas reveal more ripeness as well as an element of sur maturite. It possesses luscious fruit, medium body, and a significant amount of Merlot in the blend. There is fine density in this pure, rich, surprisingly supple 1998 Medoc. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2016.

Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 90
A classic effort, the 1998 Montrose exhibits a dense purple color in addition to a sweet nose of jammy cassis, licorice, earth, and smoke. It is a powerful and full-bodied wine with well-integrated tannin. Given Montrose's tendency to shut down, it is performing better out of bottle than I expected. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2030.

Region
St Estèphe
St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
