Robert Parker, August 2011, Score: 87/100
Slightly austere, leafy and herbal, the fresh 1998 lacks concentration, fat and fruit depth. It reveals a hint of herbs interwoven with attractive red and black currant aromas, but the wine falls off on the palate, and requires drinking up as it is likely to become increasingly desiccated. Drink 2005-2018. 87/100

Robert Parker, April 1999, Score: 87-89
An elegant wine, the 1998 exhibits tell-tale sweet cassis fruit. This wine possesses slightly aggressive tannin, a velvety texture, medium body, and attractive fat and ripeness in the mid-palate. It is well-made, and will be delicious to drink with 2-3 years of bottle age. Anticipated maturity: 2002-2015.
-
Robert Parker, April 2000, Score: 87-88
This is a lean effort, with tell-tale spicy, cedary, tobacco-tinged, black currant flavors, medium body, moderate tannin, and an elegant, restrained personality. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2014.
-
Robert Parker, April 2001, Score: 89
This austere, medium-weight Lynch Bages reveals notes of new saddle leather, tobacco, olives, and black fruits. Although not a big, concentrated Pauillac, it is graceful, elegant, with character and style. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016.

If any château in all of the classified growths consistently outperforms its original status, it is Lynch Bages. Indeed, this château has long been prized by Pauillac lovers who seek good value, yet well made wine. Region
Pauillac
Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
