    The 2020 Le Volte dell’Ornellaia is a bright, vibrant red to drink now and over the next handful of years. Sweet red cherry, mint, cedar, tobacco and peppery notes lend energy. There’s terrific aromatic complexity to play off the rich, deep fruit. The 2020 is a terrific Le Volte. One of the recent evolutions here is a focus on Merlot rather than Sangiovese, as it was in the early days. I would give this a few months in bottle, as the tannins are a bit rustic in the early going. Drink 2022-2029.

    Attractive aromas of blue fruit with slate and black-licorice character. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and an orange-peel undertone. Wet earth, some fresh sage and rosemary, too. I like the Mediterranean flavors in this vintage. Drink or hold.

    Bright and young on the nose, smells like freshly-picked red cherries, almost like sweets, blackcurrant and cherry sweets braced by bramble fruits and soft perfume. Softly creamy and chalky on the palate, strawberries and red cherries have a chalky texture and quite a perfume to the flavour profile. There is fruit there but then it's subdued a little by a savoury wood aspect, sweet vanilla and spiced clove that edges the palate. Feels a little disconnected at the moment, not all in harmony, but it has a charm to it and will be approachable earlier. One that will give a lot of pleasure. Drink 2023-2035.

    Grabs you from the first moment your nose hovers over the glass. Smudged charcoal runs into raspberry, underbrush and mandarin orange peel that speaks of Tuscan sun. Excellent quality, good persistency in the glass as it stretches out through the palate. Everything feels in balance, and this provides another indicator that 2020 is a great vintage in this corner of Italy - Le Volte is (almost) 100% Merlot but has freshness and nuance. Drink 2023-2036.

Le Volte dell'Ornellaia 2020 at £97.00 per 6 bottles IB: Little brother to the jewel in the crown Ornellaia, and for us, is the top value Italian buy of the year. The sumptuous and immensely drinkable 2020 is one of the best Le Voltes we have ever tasted. At £22.08 per bottle, the value is outstanding. It offers the softness of Bordeaux’s Merlot, the structure and depth of Cabernet Sauvignon, and the beauty and vivacity of Tuscany’s Sangiovese. This masterful blend is woven together to give the ultimate expression of Mediterranean charm.

Like us, the critics have fallen in love and Le Volte 2020 has been awarded record scores, with Galloni exclaiming. “The 2020 is a terrific Le Volte.” Decanter gives 93 points and calls it “One that will give a lot of pleasure” while Jane Anson says, “It grabs you from the first moment your nose hovers over the glass. 93 points”. Poggio alle Gazze dell’Ornellaia 2020 at £195.00 per 6 bottles IB: Produced on complex soils in an enclave of vineyards with their own unique microclimate, this is gorgeously refreshing, with abundant aromatics and a silken texture. It is perfect for summer. A blend of Sauvignon Blanc alongside Viognier, Vermentino and Verdicchio, it offers exquisite white peach and citrus fruit that mingle with fresh sage and crisp minerals. It is a perfect example of just how complex an Italian white can be.

Once again, the critics emphasis the superb value of this 2020. Jane Anson says is “So easy to recommend this white wine” and awards it 93 points. Decanter also bestows 93 points, commenting on its “smooth and succulent” texture, “very satisfying weight” and ”bright... aromatic intensity” and summing it up as “Very appealing” while Galloni is impressed by its “great energy and focus”.

  • IN BOND prices exclude UK Duty and VAT. Wines can be purchased In Bond for storage in Private Reserves or another bonded warehouse, or for export to non-EU countries. Duty and VAT must be paid before delivery can take place.

  • RETAIL prices include UK Duty and VAT. Wines for UK delivery can only be purchased this way.
