Eden Rift is already being noticed by the world’s leading critics, despite its relative youth, thanks to the vision of owner Christian Pillsbury and winemaker Cory Waller, who, together, have breathed new life into this historic estate. Based in the breath-taking Cienega Valley, this is one of California’s oldest estates being under vine since 1849. Lying only 20 miles from the Pacific Coast it has the perfect cool maritime conditions in which Chardonnay and Pinot Noir excel, but what makes this site unique are the soils.
The vines at Eden Rift sit on a vein of chalky limestone, granite and sandy loam, a true rarity in California. This extra dimension layers the wines with a true terroir based character and a gorgeous minerality, something that is so often missing in Californian Chardonnays and Pinots. The wines possess an abundance of complexity, energy, purity and flavour. Like all iconic wines, they naturally express a true sense of place.

This is the first vintage of the superb and very limited Terraces range which produces less than 300 cases annually. The terraced vineyards are a unique feature of Eden Rift's topography and site specific vineyard planting has been a particular focus for Christian since he took over in 2016.
Eden Rift Estate Chardonnay Cienega Valley 2017

Aged in 18% new French oak for 10 months, the nose is brightly scented of Meyer lemon peel, fresh quince, Bosc pear and white peaches with a floral undercurrent plus touches of crushed slate and yeast. The palate is light-bodied, bright and fresh with honeyed bass notes and great freshness on the long, clean finish. Drink 2020 -2023. 90 points, Wine Advocate

Pale ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Estate has very pretty scents of gravel dust, fresh cranberries, strawberry-rhubarb, cinnamon stick and dried leaves with notes of tar, dried citrus peel and lilac. It’s light to medium-bodied and restrained but nuanced with a gentle texture and mouthwatering freshness on the bright finish. Such a lovely, lifted style. Drink 2020 -2024. 91 points, Wine Advocate
Eden Rift Terraces Chardonnay Cienega Valley 2017

From the eastern-facing, terraced T-Block, this Chardonnay is comprised of clones 4 & 76. Barrel fermented on native yeasts in French oak, and aged 'sur-lie' in barrel (20% new) for 10 months.
It gives aromas of Red Delicious apples, pie crust, yeast, white blossoms and saline with touches of citrus pith and hazelnuts. The palate is light to medium-bodied and delicately styled with a pretty interplay of pithy fruits and honey-nut accents, finishing lifted and fresh. 136 cases produced. Eden Rift Terraces Pinot Noir Cienega Valley 2017
$475 per bottle
The inaugural release of this wine coming from a south facing vineyard located 300m above sea level. Extremely low yielding with tiny clusters of very small berries.
Pale to medium ruby-purple, the nose is deeper this vintage than the estate bottling—a well of roasted red cherries, cranberries, rhubarb and strawberry with notes of nutmeg, dried leaves, forest floor, amaro and bitters. It’s medium-bodied, silky and concentrated but light on its feet with well-woven freshness and a light graininess to the texture, finishing nuanced. Yum! 156 cases produced.
