Burgundy 2015 En Primeur: Louis Jadot

Archive

With 210 ha of vines under its control from Dijon down to Mâcon, Louis Jadot is Beaune’s preeminent négociant house. A visit to their famed winery at the edge of the town is a breath-taking experience, not because of its size, but because of the sheer attention to detail and cutting edge attitudes to every sector of the winemaking process. It is fair to say that there are few wineries in the world that can compete. Fermentation vats, large and small, stainless steel and wooden, have been individually designed based on parcel sizes and fruit characteristics. The team of winemakers, headed by Frédéric Barnier, treat each wine with the same degree of detail as any small domaine in the Côte d’Or. The result is wines that are as beautifully reflective of their appellation as any in the region.

Jadot-cellarWith a wealth of vineyards, we have selected two of our favourite wines from the outstanding 2015 vintage that highlight the immense quality of the Maison’s 2015 vintage. Both premiers crus of the highest order, one form the Côte de Nuits, Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Feusselottes, and one from the Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru Theurons from the Gagey family vineyards. Offered in a range of formats, they reflect the very best of Burgundy, the 2015 vintage, and most importantly of all, the supreme quality of Maison Louis Jadot.

2015 Beaune 1er Cru Theurons Domaine Gagey (Maison Louis Jadot)

£160.00 per 6 bottles IB
£170.00 per 3 magnums IB
£145.00 per jeroboam IB (300cl)
This fine vineyard situated above the town of Beaune was one of the Domaine des Héritiers Jadot’s earliest acquisitions of vineyards in the 1830s. As the most centrally positioned premier cru in the appellation of Beaune, Theurons is considered one of the very finest, balancing classically perfumed aromatics with boldness of fruit and potential for longevity. This 2015 is a beautiful example of those characteristics: not dense in colour, almost vibrant brick red, it is deliciously perfumed with hints of cinnamon and spice. In the palate there is a richness of dark berry fruits, balancing a harmonious mouth feel with structured density on the finish. High Class in every way. Drink 2019 – 2030, Goedhuis & Co

Bright garnet. Racy ‘mineral’ element on the nose. With just a hint of damp rope. Lots going on here! Real punch of bitter cherries on the end. Quite long. Drink 2024-2o36. 17 points, Jancis Robinson

2015 Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Feusselottes Domaine Louis Jadot
£335.00 per 6 bottles IB (limited)
£345.00 per 3 magnums IB (limited)
This excellent premier cru has a deep rich soil of predominantly clay and chalk that produce a very generous style of Chambolle, with great charm and appeal. It was certainly one of the stars in the flight of wines we tasted at the cellars in Beaune. Shining purple in colour, it has hints of dark chocolate and freshly picked strawberries on a hot summer’s day. The clay soils produce a sense of power on the palate entry, which evolves into freshness and a warming sweetness of red fruits and loganberries on the mid-palate. It is a wine full of life and energy; eminently rewarding. Drink 2020 – 2035, Goedhuis & Co

The 2015 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes has a winsome bouquet with copious red cherries, cranberry and bergamot scents that unfurl in the glass. There is a fine marine-like, seaweed scent that evolves. The palate is fresh on the entry with good grip. This is a solid and dense Chambolle-Musigny, nicely structured with broody dark berry fruit laced with black tea and spice towards the finish. It will require 4-5 years in bottle before it really enters its stride. Drink 2020-2035. 91-93 points. Neal Martin
