New Castagnoli Chianti Classico and Riservas

Archive

We are delighted to introduce the wines of Castagnoli with three superb cuvées; their deliciously approachable 2014 Chianti Classico, their more mature 2013 Riserva, and their 2012 Riserva in single magnums.

Arriving at this wonderful vineyard for the first time on a glorious September day we couldn’t help but be bowled over by both Castagnoli’s beauty, and the extraordinary quality of their wines. Situated some 1,500 feet above sea level overlooking the village of Castellina, this fine estate which takes its name from the Chestnut forests that once surrounded it, has proved to be a fine location for producing brilliant wines from the Sangiovese grape. The combination of galestro schistous soils and high altitude leads to a beautifully refined style of wine with grace and elegance. These wines have now landed in the UK and we tasted them again in the office this morning. They were simply delicious and I would wholeheartedly recommend having a case or two delivered to your door for immediate consumption.

2014 Chianti Classico Castagnoli
£84.00 per 6 bottles inc VAT

From the Sangiovese Grosso variety, this fine wine is initially fermented in small barrels and then goes through its aging in larger 1,800 litre foudres. Wonderfully pure, with aromatic red fruit characteristics. This is a very easy attractive style, with a subtle grainy tannic touch. Beautifully balanced between gentle sweet red fruits and life and freshness on the finish. Drink 2017 – 2020

2013 Chianti Classico Riserva Terrazze Castagnoli
£119.00 per 6 bottles inc VAT

Again made from Sangiovese Grosso, the fruit for this wine comes from southerly facing terraced vineyards. A naturally deep purple colour, this wine has a pronounced dark fruit character with hints of spice and leather. In the palate there is superb richness with an excellent central core and intensity. Dense, yet without excess, having spent 21 months in cask, this is a really lovely example of top end Chianti Classico Riserva. Drink 2017 – 2024

2012 Chianti Classico Riserva Terrazze Castagnoli Magnums
£44.00 per single magnum inc VAT

Mature plum purple colour. The very refined nose has hints of Morello cherries which follow through into the palate giving a lovely tangy sweetness. The soft velvety tannins provide texture, volume and complexity. Notes of sweet stewed fruit provide length and real appeal on the finish. A delicious example of mature Chianti Riserva at its peak. Drink 2017 – 2024

The Estate
Castagnoli can trace its origins back to 987, once serving as a monastery. No doubt due to the beauty of its location, it later became home to a wealthy Florentine noble family. Today under the current ownership the estate consists of 13.5 ha of vineyards and 78 ha of olive groves, run by Sonia Ermini and her vineyard manager Giampaolo, from the famed Isole e Olena estate. They follow traditional techniques, using Slovenian Foudres for their Classico and French barriques for the Riserva. They use gentle fermentation up to a maximum of 28 degrees to preserve purity and refinement, which is such an important characteristic of the property’s wines.
