I have been lucky enough to do something I feel very passionate about and along the way I have met lots of very interesting people.
My first En Primeur campaign at Goedhuis was 2005 Bordeaux which is one of the greatest modern day vintages. I also love Burgundy, it’s not just the wine but the region itself, the wonderful intricate vineyards and the beautiful villages and so many great characters. When tasting at a Domaine it can be the purest expression of terroirs and tasting a range of different vineyards from barrel is a truly wonderful experience.
Many years ago I remember visiting Chablis and having dinner with one of our growers, he produced a bottle of Chablis and served it blind. He asked what I thought it was. I said it had to be a Grand Cru and maybe 10 years old. I couldn’t have been more wrong, it was 1955 Chablis 1er Cru Leys and it was seriously good. I told him how fantastic it was and he replied “yes but it’s not as good as the 1948”. I had to laugh and ever since then I have always loved great Chablis.
Bordeaux is also an amazing wine region, I have drunk plenty of memorable bottles and there are so many great Chateaux but 1996 Ch. Margaux has to be one of the greatest bottles I have ever drunk.
I love Italy, particularly Tuscany, these wines give so much pleasure and you can’t fail to love them.
Home is Suffolk where we live on a small farm, hence the connection and love of vineyards.
