  • Neal Martin, April 2024, Score: 88-90

The 2023 Beaumont has a generous bouquet with a mixture of blackberries, red plums and sous-bois. It's not as powerful as the previous vintage, but there is always a sense of "honesty" about this Claret that I appreciate. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins and fine acidity, quite smooth in texture, with a touch of savoriness on the finish. Enjoy it over six to eight years. Drink 2027-2036.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2024, Score: 87-89

Aromas of sweet cassis and plums framed by a touch of creamy oak introduce the 2023 Beaumont, a medium-bodied, supple, soft and giving blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot. While this estate suffered from frost and mildew, for now it retains attractive purity of fruit in an easygoing style.

  • James Suckling, April 2024, Score: 89-90

Notes of dark berry and walnut here. It’s medium-bodied with a grainy texture and some good fruit at the end.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2024, Score: 88-90

This remains the most reliable Cru Bourgeois in the Haut Medoc, delivering as always. Vibrant, fresh currant fruit, cassis and blackberry sorbet. A touch of sweetness from the cocoa and vanilla oak gives good persistence on the finish.

Producer

Château Beaumont

Since 1986 when this property was purchased by two insurance companies, Château Beaumont has been producing some of the best value Cru Bourgeois available in Bordeaux.

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
