  • Goedhuis, December 2023

The last of St Aubin’s Premiers Crus as you leave it heading northwest, Les Castets is perfectly positioned to support Damien’s theory of the benefits of appellation’s cooler location. Floral aromas of jasmine, nectarine and a smattering of crunchy hazelnut. A very textured wine, with almost tannic depth, firmly structured with superb length. Classy.

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 90-92

Back after being blended into a generic Premier Cru last year, the 2022 Saint-Aubin Les Castets 1er Cru has a tightly-wound bouquet with Granny Smiths and quite potent flinty elements drawing you more towards Puligny. The palate is well-balanced with a lightly spiced opening. Very malic, which is remarkable considering the warmth that summer, with veins of stem ginger and crushed stone towards the finish. Quite uncompromising…in a good way. Drinking WIndow: 2025-2038.

  • WK, January 2024, Score: 90

The 2022 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Castets is pure and expressive, bursting with aromas of citrus zest, white flowers and wet stones. Medium-bodied, ample and satiny, with a fine-boned, mineral profile, it will offer considerable appeal on release. Drink 2024-2037.

Their strict principles of using only natural yeast, having a slow, cool fermentation and little ‘débourbage' (draining the juice fromits sediment) contributes to their pure, fresh flavours and impeccable balance. The domaine is now run by brothers Pierre-Yves, Damien and Joseph who took over from their semi-retired father several years back. The "changing of the guard" has had little effect on the wines. The only notable difference is less stirring of the lees in order to retain the wines' mineral undertones. And as aresult, they are as delicious and sincere as ever.Read less

Region

Saint Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
