Vinous, March 2023, Score: 90
The 2022 Soave Classico is a total pleasure on the nose. Sweet smoke and mint nuances complement tropical green melon notes. This soothes with its soft textures while stimulating the senses with a zesty mix of brisk acidity and candied citrus. It tapers off crisp and clean with an inner floral resonance as lemon oil traces slowly fade. I would drink this any night of the week. What a treat. Drink 2023-2026.

Located on the stony hills of Soave Classico is the renowned Pieropan estate. With 58 hectares of vineyards, this family-owned winery has been producing wines in Soave since the late 19th century. Regional trailblazers, Pieropan became the first producer to bottle a wine with the name Soave in the early 1930s, while in 1971, they became the first to make a single-vineyard wine – ‘Calvarino’. Certainly, Pieropan owe much of their reputation to their two single-vineyard wines: ‘Calvarino’ and ‘La Rocca’. ‘Calvarino’, made using grapes grown on the volcanic basalt of Soave Classico, is similar in style to top Chablis, while the latter is richer and more opulent as a result of fermentation in oak. Today, brothers Andrea and Dario run the estate, taking over from their late father Nino who oversaw over 40 years of revolutionary winemaking. As of 2015, all Pieropan wines are certified organic.Read less
Region
Soave
Soave produces Italy's second most famous white wine after Pinot Grigio. The region is divided intotwo distinct zones - Soave, comprising most of the alluvial plains, and Soave Classico, encompassing the higher reaching hillsides. The wine is made mostly (if not entirely) from Garganega, an aromatic, light skinned variety that when grown on poorer, well drained soils with lower yields can create wines with notable flavour and concentration. Though known mostly for its dry whites, a rare dessert wine is also produced called Recioto di Soave that is made from naturally dried grapes.
