  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 93-95

The 2022 Suduiraut comes from a quick and late harvest in October (three tries between 17 and 27 October with some passerillé grapes in September). Bunches were affected by botrytis but did not concentrate, at least not until a period of wind and warmth. Wild honey, quince and touches of marmalade on the nose, this opens nicely in the glass. The palate is pure and viscous in texture, with marmalade, again, and dried honey. Very open and approachable on the finish. Not profound, but quite delicious. Christian Seely said he drank this for breakfast the previous day - why not? Drink 2025-2055

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Suduiraut is laced with hints of tangerine peel, spice, vanillin, chamomile and dried flowers. It offers a lovely mix of botrytis-inflected flavors and textures while also showing quite a bit of freshness. The 2022 is done in the lighter style the château favors these days. My impression is that it is still coming together, as the wine shows a very slight lack of cohesion that is not typical. Drink 2027-2047.

100% Semillon, this has a radiant golden lemon colour. Perfumed nose of jasmine, with a fruit salad of pears, peaches, guava and caramelised oranges. Plush and honeyed with a velvety texture on the palate, with crème caramel and a citrus orange lift on the finish.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 98-99

Wow. This is incredibly concentrated with such depth and power. Dried oranges. Full-bodied with some phenolic tension that frames the wine perfectly. Dried apricots and peaches. Incredible richness and freshness. Spicy and flavorful. Tastes more like a BA from Germany! 100% semillon.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 97-99

One of the finest Sauternes I've been lucky enough to taste in some time, the 2022 Château Suduiraut is 100% Sémillon that hit 13.9% natural alcohol, with 190 grams per liter of residual sugar. Still resting in 70% new barrels, this monster of a Sauternes offers a huge nose of honeyed citrus, orange marmalade, spice, brioche, and almond paste. Full-bodied, rich, and massively concentrated, nevertheless, it somehow stays flawlessly balanced, fresh, and light on its feet.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 19+

Explosively perfumed and possessing sensational length, this is a phenomenal wine in 2022. Suduiraut was one of a handful of properties that gambled and won. There was no botrytis on the grapes when they did their first trie (a selective harvest of air-dried grapes). But rather than bringing in all of the grapes at this stage to make a delicate style of sweet wine, they decided to let the remaining bunches hang. Those that waited and threw the dice triumphed because the mists and the rain arrived late in the season, promoting the arrival of botrytis. Perhaps it is better to use its synonym in the circumstances, Noble Rot! Suduiraut did their second trie between the 17th and 24th of October and the third between the 24th and 27th of October. In the end, 10% of this blend comes from the first tri, while the balance is epic botrytised fruit, resulting in an incredibly concentrated wine with exotic mango notes, beeswaxy flamboyance and oceans of honey. This wine is fuelled for a long ride with a mighty 190 g/l residual sugar on board. I remember drinking 1899 Suduiraut some years ago, and I don’t doubt that this wine stands a chance of making a century, too, if it is stored carefully!

Region

Sauternes

It is not an exaggeration to say that these are the greatest sweet wines in the world. They are the result of a serendipitous marriage of grape variety, location, annual weather conditions and human care and determination. The vineyards are located on the banks of the cool spring-fed Ciron river which, in autumn, flows into the warmer tidal Garonne and creates rolling evening mists which clothe the vines until the afternoon sun burns them off the following day. This cycle creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea or noble rot, and the resulting grape juice is a super concentrated sweet, ambrosial nectar which makes the most heavenly and complex wines with extraordinary ability to age. In 1855 the wines were classified into first and second growths, with Ch d'Yquem rightly receivingits own super status of premier grand cru. Other stunning wines include Chx Sudiraut, Rieussec, Coutet and Climens. While seductively fragrant and sweet when young, if you can bear to wait, you will be amply rewarded with lusciously rich, exotically complex wine.
