  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 89-91

The 2022 Peymouton was picked 19 September to 5 October. It has a much more powerful nose than the 2021 with blackberry, raspberry coulis and dark chocolate scents. Real presence. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins that frame that dark berry fruit. Hints of dark chocolate again toward the finish that display just the right amount of dryness. Enjoy over the next decade. Drink 2027-2037

  • Wine Advocate, April 2023, Score: 87-90

The 2022 Peymouton exhibits aromas of rich berries, cherries and plums, followed by a medium to full-bodied, sweet and fleshy palate with a ripe core of somewhat jammy fruit that's framed by powdery tannins.

  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 90-92

An important 31-hectare estate that is quintessential St Emilion, with rich clay soils lying over a limestone base. An array of bucolic fragrances: bramble, cherry blossom and freshly mown hay. There is a gentle richness of fruit on the palate, held in place by the wine’s tight minerality and long, mouth-watering persistence.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 15.5

A medium-bodied red with velvety tannins and a spiced, chocolatey finish with hints of nut shell and dried flowers. Dry and chalky. 82% merlot, 10% cabernet franc and 8% cabernet sauvignon.

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 91-93

The 2022 Château Peymouton is based on 89% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. This inky-hued beauty may be the best to date and has a gorgeous nose of pure black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, and graphite, with a touch of background minerality. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, pure, and incredibly elegant, it shines for its purity, balance, and length.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 16.5

Bright, open, black cherry-fruited and crispy tannic, this is an immediately impressive wine with lip-smacking purity and a forward air. Accurate and refreshing, this is a superb example of a hard working estate getting the most from a challenging and ultimately rewarding vintage.

Region

St Emilion

South of Pomerol lies the medieval, perched village of St Emilion. Surrounding St Emilion are vines that produce round, rich and often hedonistic wines. Despite a myriad of soil types, two main ones dominate - the gravelly, limestone slopes that delve down to the valley from the plateau and the valley itself which is comprised of limestone, gravel, clay and sand. Despite St Emilion's popularity today, it was not until the 1980s to early 1990s that attention was brought to this region. Robert Parker, the famous wine critic, began reviewing their Merlot-dominated wines and giving them hefty scores. The rest is history as they say. Similar to the Médoc, there is a classification system in place which dates from 1955 and outlines several levels of quality. These include its regional appellation of St Emilion, St Emilion Grand Cru, St Emilion Grand Cru Classé and St Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classé, which is further divided into "A" (Ausone and Cheval Blanc) and "B" (including Angélus, Canon, Figeac and a handful of others). To ensure better accuracy, the classification is redone every 10 years enabling certain châteaux to be upgraded or downgraded depending on on the quality of their more recent vintages.
