  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Les Cruzelles was picked between 1 and 12 September and matured in 50% new oak. This has plenty of fruité on the nose: small red cherries, redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit, a touch of cedar in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful definition and mineralité, dark fruit, hints of black tea and spices, really harmonious and sappy on the finish. Possibly the best Les Cruzelles that I have tasted at this stage and sure to be an unbeatable value-for-money. Drink 2028-2050

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Les Cruzelles is a wine of notable breadth and texture. Older vines and clay-rich soils yield a Lalande de Pomerol that offers notable resonance. Dark-toned fruit, leather, tobacco, incense, licorice and lavender infuse the 2022 with considerable nuance to match its virile, rather somber feel. Drink 2025-2037.

  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 92-94

From the gravel and clay soils of Lalande de Pomerol, this is made from 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, a favoured blend of winemaker Noëmie Durantou. A dynamic wine with its bitter orange peel, dark chocolate, loganberry flavours. A very easy open style, this wine has a rewarding freshness and an excellent, energetic finish.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 93-94

A solid red with blackberry, chocolate, walnut and hazelnut. Medium to full body. Smily face here, thanks to the ripe seeds.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2023, Score: 16.5

Purer and more refined than La Chenade with added complexity and length. Red-fruit aroma. Some sweetness on the mid-palate (oak?) but fresh and crunchy on the finish. (James Lawther MW) 14.6% Drink 2028 – 2040

  • Jeb Dunnuck, April 2023, Score: 92-94

Another gorgeous Lalande de Pomerol, the 2022 Château Les Cruzelles is deep ruby/purple and boasts a great nose of ripe darker cherries, cassis, graphite, and flowers. A blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, it's medium-bodied, stays lively and elegant, and has silky tannins as well as a great finish. It's going to be a hidden gem in the vintage that readers will love to have in the cellar.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 17.5

A fantastic plot of Merlot in this vineyard is, apparently, the reason for the extra degree of magic in this wine. Les Cruzelles increases flavour intensity a notch or two over portfolio pals Saintayme and La Chenade with fleshier fruit notes and more amplitude of perfume. The tannins are visible early here, and they hold hands with the plum, mulberry and more exotic tones, keeping them upright and controlled. The oak also supports the fruit by bringing discreet seasoning, a crunch of chypre and warm bark, which adds higher perfume notes and even more allure. The overall experience is sublime.

Producer

Château les Cruzelles

Part of the incredibly well-respected Durantou stable, this 10 hectare estate is rated as one of the "outstanding" Lalande-de-Pomerol Châteaux, in Robert Parker's Bordeaux guide. The grape varietals grown are 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Only 2,000 cases are made.

Region

Lalande de Pomerol

Lalande de Pomerol is situated to the north-west of the Dordogne River north of Pomerol. Similar to the great Pomerol appellation the wines are Merlot dominated but sold at a fraction of the price. Some great value wines can be found to the south of the Lalande de Pomerol region as only the Barbanne River separates the two appellations.
