  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Guiraud, back after being decimated by frost and now with former Yquem winemaker Sandrine Garbay at the helm, has a fragrant bouquet with quince, lemon curd, dried honey and saffron scents. It takes a while to find its groove. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous opening and well-judged acidity. It's harmonious and sensual, with a pure, lightly spiced finish that lingers. Very fine. Drink 2027-2049

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 92-94

The 2022 Giraud is very beautiful. In this vintage, Giraud is not quite as rich as it can be, and yet it still offers notable depth and nuance. Spice, ginger, orange confit and apricot jam open nicely in a mid-weight Giraud that shows terrific energy. Drink 2027-2047.

  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 93-95

Ch Guiraud has a higher proportion of Sauvignon (38%) in its blend than some of its other Premier Cru neighbours. This contributes to a racy fresh brightness and energy, refreshing the palate and counterbalancing the overall sweetness of the wine. Flavours of freshly picked sweet grapes, cream and pavlova, honeyed summer fruits and a finish of butterscotch, make for a very attractive sweet wine, without excess.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 94-95

A refined and pretty Sauternes with crushed apple, spice and dried pear character. Medium body with a fresh spice and intense finish at the end.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 18.5+

Château Guiraud (1er Cru Sauternes) With beautiful balance and a super-long finish, this is a tremendous Guiraud and a wine that underlines the class of this estate. Butterscotch, papaya, pear and honey with melon and ginger, too, this is a stunningly complex wine that will live for decades. They passed through the vineyard three times here and harvested passerillé (air-dried on the vine, but not rot-affected) on the first pass and then the second two resulted in botrytis-affected fruit. When these three elements were blended, it resulted in this heavenly, open and amazingly forward wine.

In 2006 the family sold the estate to a consortium, led by Robert Peugeot, and including Stephan von Neipperg (of Château Canon La Gaffelière), Olivier Bernard (of Domaine de Chevalier) and Xavier Planty. The vineyards comprise 100 hectares of vines, 85 of which are commited to Sauternes production and the remainder to the estate's dry white "G de Guiraud". Vines are 65% Semillon and 35% Sauvignon Blanc. Vines have an average age of 40 years and yields in the order of 12hl/ha. Modern winemaking (without recourse to techniques such as cryo-extraction) ensues, and ageing in new oak barrels for up to two years.Read less

Region

Sauternes

It is not an exaggeration to say that these are the greatest sweet wines in the world. They are the result of a serendipitous marriage of grape variety, location, annual weather conditions and human care and determination. The vineyards are located on the banks of the cool spring-fed Ciron river which, in autumn, flows into the warmer tidal Garonne and creates rolling evening mists which clothe the vines until the afternoon sun burns them off the following day. This cycle creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea or noble rot, and the resulting grape juice is a super concentrated sweet, ambrosial nectar which makes the most heavenly and complex wines with extraordinary ability to age. In 1855 the wines were classified into first and second growths, with Ch d'Yquem rightly receivingits own super status of premier grand cru. Other stunning wines include Chx Sudiraut, Rieussec, Coutet and Climens. While seductively fragrant and sweet when young, if you can bear to wait, you will be amply rewarded with lusciously rich, exotically complex wine.
