  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 91-93

An under the radar St Julien and one of the value sleepers of the vintage. Originally part of the St Pierre estate, today Du Glana benefits from a completely modernised cellar and wine-making facility, finished in 2015. Owner Jean-Paul Meffre has made a modern classic. Appealing flavours of ripe blackcurrant, crème de mûre and cedar are carried on the palate by a juicy succulence that has surprising concentration. The crisp fresh acidity and the fine-grained tannins frame the wine perfectly. The finish fans out with toasted popcorn and sandalwood.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 91-92

A medium-bodied red with ripe dark fruit and velvety, supple tannin structure. Firm finish.

  • LPB, April 2023, Score: 89-91

The 2022 du Glana is deep garnet-purple in color. There are slight notes of reduction to start before it charges out with vivacious notions of black raspberries, blackcurrant cordial, and stewed plums with hints of wild fungi, damp soil, and crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is plush and juicy, with loads of earthy nuances and good length.

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
