  • Neal Martin, April 2023, Score: 93-95

The 2022 Bastor-Lamontagne has a pure bouquet with honeysuckle, dried honey and quince aromas. With much more focus than in previous vintages, the palate is well balanced with tangy marmalade notes on the entry. There's fine acidity, and the 2022 is harmonious with a minerally finish. It's the best wine I have tasted from this fast-improving Sauternes estate. Drink 2027-2047

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2023, Score: 91-93

The 2022 Bastor-Lamontagne is gorgeous. It offers a little more density than in most years, which is not a bad thing. Tangerine peel, orange confit, passionfruit, mint, ginger and apricot are some of the many notes that grace this classy, layered edition of Bastor-Lamontagne. Drink 2025-2032.

  • Goedhuis, April 2023, Score: 91-93

A combination of 55% Sauvignon Blanc and 45% Semillon, this property offers tremendous value for money. Honeysuckle, white peach and Seville orange aromas, it has a balanced sweetness, with a creamy texture, finishing with crème anglaise, barley sugar and oak spice.

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 93-94

Dried apple, pear and spice with botrytis character. Full and rich. Medium sweet. Solid structure. Serious intensity for this property. 55% sauvignon and 45% semillon.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 16.5

This is a relatively straightforward wine with decent texture and purity, but it lacks complexity, and there does not seem to be sufficient acidity to enable it to age and develop in the medium term. Having said this, it is a tasty, forward-drinking wine.

It is not an exaggeration to say that these are the greatest sweet wines in the world. They are the result of a serendipitous marriage of grape variety, location, annual weather conditions and human care and determination. The vineyards are located on the banks of the cool spring-fed Ciron river which, in autumn, flows into the warmer tidal Garonne and creates rolling evening mists which clothe the vines until the afternoon sun burns them off the following day. This cycle creates perfect conditions for the development of botrytis cinerea or noble rot, and the resulting grape juice is a super concentrated sweet, ambrosial nectar which makes the most heavenly and complex wines with extraordinary ability to age. In 1855 the wines were classified into first and second growths, with Ch d'Yquem rightly receivingits own super status of premier grand cru. Other stunning wines include Chx Sudiraut, Rieussec, Coutet and Climens. While seductively fragrant and sweet when young, if you can bear to wait, you will be amply rewarded with lusciously rich, exotically complex wine.
