  • Goedhuis, December 2022

The Grivot family own 2.7 hectares extending over nine lieux-dits, which combine to produce an archetypal village Vosne Romanée. A very lovely cuvée, syrup of grenadine, soft round tannins, powdery in texture. The finish combines sweetness and freshness. Lovely.

  • Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 89-91

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village has a very pretty nose with brambly red fruit briary and light sous-bois aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, fine backbone, quite tannic with a touch of white pepper on the finish. A lovely Vosne-Romanée.

  • Burghound, January 2023, Score: 17.5

A slightly deeper pitched nose combines notes of red and blue fruit along with hints of sandalwood and exotic tea. The mouthfeel of the more concentrated flavors is also quite sleek and tension-filled while delivering fine length on the balanced finale. This could use better depth, but more should reasonably develop if it’s allowed a few years of keeping. (89-91)/2028+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2023, Score: 17.5

Tidy, smooth, and accurate, despite the village level, this has more charm than many 1er Crus. This is a lip-smacking wine, and it is seemingly decent value, too, given that Grivot’s prices have shot up in recent years.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2022, Score: 88-91

Not especially deep in colour, the nose has a soft perfume similar to the Bourgogne only more so. A light biscuit touch on the palate, more in length than in depth, but certainly persistent. Stylish Drink from 2025-2030.

Producer

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
