Goedhuis
The unofficial ‘cru’ of Sancerre, this steep hillside of varied soils produces age-worthy wines year on year. Dramatically named Les Monts Damnés (the ‘Hills of the Damned’), this legendary vineyard is notoriously challenging to manage, however the results are well worth the backpain; while styles may vary per vintage, the quality is never in doubt. Due to a high content of Kimmeridgian marl in the soil, there is a delicious minerality to these wines which, when coupled with the natural qualities of Sauvignon Blanc, results in a flavour profile unique to the vineyard.

Antonio Galloni, August 2022, Score: 92
While the 2021 Sancerre Les Monts Damnés is a light bodied wine with a sense of roundness at first, there's no mistaking this is a forceful, grippy style. In its youth, it remains relatively restrained with a touch of green jalapeño and herbs reflecting the cooler season, as well as an almost spicy and salty edge. A little more fleeting than expected. Since inheriting his father’s parcels of old vines in 1990, François Cotat has become one of the most sought-after names in the Loire thanks to his cellar-worthy Sancerre. François' success and individuality can be attributed to his intense passion for creating the finest examples of Sauvignon Blanc and his exceptionally placed vineyards; his gift for producing long-lived wines from this varietal is unmatched. Four hectares of vines sit on outstanding terroirs outside the village of Chavignol where the steep south facing slopes are rich in Kimmeridgian marl, the same clay and limestone soils that give Chablis its distinctive character. Organic viticulture combined with densely planted vines, ultra-low yields and relatively late harvesting produces fantastically flavoursome fruit. In the winery, traditional non-intervention winemaking is the rule with little handling and no fining or filtration. A visit to their ancient cellar is a testament to this old-fashioned way of thinking. This is the way wines should be made - calmly, naturally and slowly.Read less

Region
Sancerre
The picturesque town of Sancerre perches atop a hill on the left bank of the Loire with vineyards planted on limestone and clay hillsides. A total of 14 villages and 3 hamlets have the rights to produce Sancerre, and, due to the increasing popularity of the wine, the area under vine trebled in the last quarter of the 20th century. Often considered the classic home of Sauvignon Blanc, good Sancerre is crisp, elegant and aromatic, and among the finest and most complex Sauvignons in the world. Delicate reds and roses are also made from Pinot Noir.
