Goedhuis, December 2022
Aux Boudots is the most northerly Premier Cru in Nuits St Georges, neighbouring Vosne Romanée’s Aux Malconsorts, hence this is a prized source of high-class fruit. Ben says this vineyard particularly suffered from the stress of the frost and recovered late in the season,, so he only had a 25% crop in 2021. However, with such small yields it has a stunning intensity of harmonious red cherry fruits. Silky in nature, with fine powdery tannins, this is a beautiful representation of Vosne Romanée.

The 2021 Nuits Saint-Georges les Boudots 1er Cru is a little more closed than the Les Cailles, slightly earthier in style and opens with dark berry and subtle Earl Grey scents. The palate is medium-bodied with an edgy opening and fine acidity. There's a little fleshiness here with a savory, tobacco-tinged finish. Fine, though the Les Cailles has a little more panache.

Matthew Jukes, January 2023, Score: 18
Yes, this is a pricey wine, but this is a stellar vineyard, and Ben seems to have carefully captured the essence of the site and managed to keep admirable length and accuracy throughout. This is nowhere as rich as a chunky, warm vintage Boudots, but it is a complex wine with a delightfully fresh finish, and I know it will look like good value in a couple of years.

Region
Nuits Saint Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
