  • Goedhuis, December 2022

With so little wine, Damian has blended his two Premiers Crus, Champs Gain and Chenevottes, to create this high class cuvée. A lively freshness on the nose of grapefruit and blood orange. On the palate it starts off rather shy and then slowly builds to express flavours of toffee, walnut and nutmeg. A degree of power and earthily rustic. Very good length. Drink 2024-2032

  • Neal Martin, November 2022, Score: 90-92

The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru is a blend of surviving fruit from Les Champs Gain and Les Chenevottes. It has a lean but focused, citrus-fresh, quite flinty, almost Chablis-like bouquet. The palate is well balanced with fine weight and tension, sour lemon mixed with orange rind and marmalade with plenty of energy and depth on the finish. This is a successful blend, and it should age well in bottle. Drink 2024-2037

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 92-94

A blend of Chenevottes and Champgains. A mid yellow colour. More flesh and less hillside minerals on show in the bouquet. Fresh lemons on the palate without extrovert acidity, details, a touch of lime now at the finish, but feels ripe enough. Complex, slightly stony yet with a full complement of white fruit, and a good long finish. Drink from 2026-2031.

One of our favourite Burgundy estates, Domaine Marc Colin produces year-in and year-out, some of the most balanced, expressive wines in the Côte de Beaune. Their strict principles of using only natural yeast, having a slow, cool fermentation and little ‘débourbage' (draining the juice fromits sediment) contributes to their pure, fresh flavours and impeccable balance. The domaine is now run by brothers Pierre-Yves, Damien and Joseph who took over from their semi-retired father several years back. The "changing of the guard" has had little effect on the wines. The only notable difference is less stirring of the lees in order to retain the wines' mineral undertones. And as aresult, they are as delicious and sincere as ever.Read less

Region

Chassagne Montrachet

The white wines of Chassagne Montrachet can be difficult to distinguish from Puligny. At their most typical they are slightly fleshier and more hedonistic, but are often just as mineral and refined making the two almost inseparable. When distinguishable, they offer notes of honeysuckle, lime blossom and honey. Many have become quite approachable when young. It is larger than Puligny with vineyards totalling over 330 hectares. Though it shares both the grand cru vineyards of Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, it has sole ownership of the miniscule Criots Bâtard Montrachet. Similar to Puligny, Chassagne also grows Pinot Noir, which can be austere when young. A small amount of red Chassagne is also made.
