  • Goedhuis, December 2022

The warmth of this location gives rise to a flamboyant wine, a little more ostentatious than some of its other Grands Crus neighbours. It wholly supports the 50% barrel ageing Benoît likes to give this wine. Layered clotted cream flavours, with a nuance of white pepper and spice, the finish is creamy with a touch of fudge and brioche. Seductive and enticing.

  • Neal Martin, September 2023, Score: 96

The 2021 Chablis Grenouilles Grand Cru has a wonderful, complex and spicier bouquet than Droin's other cuvées: very mineral-driven yet nuanced. Nosing this is like walking into a raucous house party. The palate is exquisitely balanced with a killer line of acidity. Intense, yet amazingly focused with superb persistence and drive on the finish. This fulfills all the promises that it showed in tank last year. Brilliant.

  • Burghound, October 2022, Score: 92-94

More subtle though hardly invisible wood easily allows the aromas of mineral reduction, tidal pool and strong iodine hints to shine. The rich, powerful and concentrated larger-scaled flavors coat the mouth on the slightly finer and impressively long finish. This could use a bit more depth but given how well this wine typically ages, that shouldn’t be a concern. Drink 2031+

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2022, Score: 94-96

Pale and fresh with some spice. Really crisp marine notes than an explosion of generous fruit while staying fresh. This is going to be really good! The 2021 Grenouilles reminds Benoît of 2008 and 2014. Brilliant length. Chapeau! 5 stars. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: June 2022

It is quite something to be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620. Unsurprisingly over this 400-year period, the Droins have built up a sizeable 26-hectare estate and an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within the Chablis region. Benoît joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24, and for the last decade has assumed total control. During this period, he has continued the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil but has quietly adjusted the winemaking style. The use of oak is less prevalent today than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, resulting in a greater terroir identity to the domaine’s wines and a mineral drive and edge. At the risk of testing his natural modesty, Benoît is very firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of Chablis’s greats. Regularly achieving top spot in blind tastings, in our view his brilliance is unsurpassed today.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
