Tasting Notes

  • WA

    Wine Advocate, April 2022,
    Score: 91-93

The 2021 Roc de Cambes is shaping up beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, wild plums, rich cassis, pipe tobacco and espresso roast. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and textural, it's a rich, sensual wine with an elegantly muscular profile, its structuring tannins largely concealed by succulent fruit. Seamless and penetrating, it's an especially elegant rendition of this superb clay-limestone terroir in the Côtes de Bourg.

    Antonio Galloni, April 2022,
    Score: 92-94

The 2021 Roc de Cambes is fabulous. It possesses terrific depth and intensity from start to finish. Black cherry, plum, licorice, smoke, tobacco, incense and dried herbs build effortlessly in the glass. All the elements are beautifully balanced. The 2021 is so appealing today, but it clearly offers considerable potential for the future. Drink 2026-2036

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, April 2022,
    Score: 93-95

80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. François Mitjaville played the waiting game and picked late in October and has been rewarded with a deep and intense wine. With flavours of blackcurrants, vanilla and spice, there is ample volume on the palate and whilst the oak is currently a little noticeable, it will subside, to allow the fruit to express itself perfectly.

  • WCI

    Wine Cellar Insider, April 2022,
    Score: 91-93

Cigar wrapper, forest floor, spicy, leafy, savory red berries and a strong does of crushed stone in the nose and on the palate sets you up for the endnote which finishes with salty tannins and earthy, leafy, fresh, vibrant red fruits. Drink from 2023-2037.

Producer

Château Roc des Cambes

Bought in 1988 by François Mitjavile, the owner of Château Tetre-Rôtebouef in St-Emilion. He considered its position; south facing, in two natural amphitheatres, next to the Gironde to be perfect for wine-growing. He undertook to reinvigorate the 14ha vineyard and introduced late harvesting (traditionally in this area they harvest too early, whilst the grapes are still a little under-ripe). Proportions of grapes are 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. Fermentation is in temperature controlled cement vats and ageing in barriques - 50% new - for 15-18 months. The wine is full bodied, robust, rich and long lasting, yet well balanced.

Region

Côtes de Bourg

Côtes de Bourg is a Bordeaux appellation surrounding the town of Bourg on the right bank of the Gironde, 20 km north-west of Bordeaux. It has a maritime climate and the vineyards close to the river are particularly well protected from frost damage. The Côtes de Bourg are characterised by the diversity and richness of their soils, composed of mainly clay and limestone soils with sand and gravel in some parts. Most of the wine produced is red wine. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are planted on clay and sandy gravel soils, while Merlot is also grown on the widespread areas of clay and limestone. Historically the region produced robust and sober wines but the wines are becoming more approachable with the introduction of more fruit driven vinification techniques. Red Côtes de Bourg are garnet in colour and are predominantly based on the Merlot grape, blended with smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. They are typically earthy but fruity with blackcurrant dominating the flavour profile. They can be laid down for 6-10 years or more but can also be drunk young. A little white is made, chiefly from Ugni Blanc and Colombard grapes.
