Goedhuis, September 2022
This South African Chardonnay is produced from vines planted nearly 400 metres above sea-level in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The cooler climate and ancient glacial soils give a wine that echoes its Burgundian counterparts. An elegant nose of fresh citrus fruit, quince, crushed chalk and hazlenuts alongside white flowers. There’s a beautiful line of energy to this wine and a saline freshness backed up by perfectly judged oak. Delicious now but try hanging on to at least one bottle for a few years, it’s only going to get better!

Neal Martin, August 2022, Score: 90
The 2021 Chardonnay is aged for 10 months in French oak barrel with no malo or lees-stirring, 20% new wood. It has a well-defined bouquet with yellow plum and orange pith scents, the oak nicely understated. The palate is well balanced with a crisp entry, lightly oaked and a slightly nutty almost Meursault-like personality with decent length on the finish. Well-worth seeking out. Drink 2022-2030.

Hemel-en-Aarde
The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is a ward within the Walker Bay district of South Africa. Meaning 'Heaven on Earth', this beautiful valley has the Cape's highest proprtion of Pinot Noir. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc also flourish here thanks to the cooling influence of the Atalantic to the South and the Babylon mountains to the North. Ancient glacial soils make this region a geological wonder capable of producing hugely complex wines.
