2020 was a challenging year for Australia, made even tougher with the devastating bushfires wiping out many viticultural regions. Fortunately, Yarra Valley was spared, with the end of the season bringing more favourable weather, resulting in wines that are fragrant with bright acidity running through. This Pinot Noir is no exception, and its delicacy cannot be overstated. Bright crimson in the glass, this is a charmingly perfumed wine with an expressive bouquet of red cherry and violets, which are bolstered by a touch of aniseed and five spice. Velvety on the palate, with lively acidity, the 2020 vintage has a fine tannin structure to reward some cellaring.
Producer
Yarra Yering
One of Victoria’s oldest and most beautiful estates, Yarra Yering was recently crowned as the number one winery in all of Australia by Huon Hooke at The Real Review, Australia’s leading critic and wine publication. Changing tastes and a miserable economy had brought wine production in the Yarra Valley to an abrupt halt in the 1920s. It would need a pioneer to re-establish winemaking in the region and in 1969 one came along – Dr Bailey Carrodus. A trained botanist, Carrodus had a doctorate in plant physiology from Oxford and, with this specialist knowledge, he was able to bring Yarra Valley winemaking back to life. The late iconoclastic founder of the Yarra Yering winery, Carrodus was never one to make wine by the book, instead choosing to live by the philosophy – “if it doesn't work, I'll just tip it out”. Today, Carrodus’ vision is being continued by current winemaker Sarah Crowe, winner of James Halliday’s 2017 Winemaker of the Year, whose focus is on giving individual varieties and parcels the time and attention they deserve. From its famously cool climate, winemaker Sarah Crowe crafts bold, complex and utterly exquisite wines from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as Bordeaux and Rhone red blends. Unirrigated vines, incredibly low yields, and whole bunch fermentations gives wines with incredible intensity and concentration of flavour, perfectly balanced by an abundance of natural acidity. These fabulous wines have become a cult classic amongst Australian collectors and are usually produced in woefully small quantities.

Yarra Valley
A cool growing region of particularly high quality, just north of Melbourne, Victoria. It is internationally recognized for the calibre of its Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays, and some excellent Cabernet Sauvignons in warmer vintages.
