  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Aux Brûlées sits above Richebourg and owes its name to its well exposed south-facing aspect. As a result, it is a highly prized 1er Cru within Vosne’s hierarchy, and the sunny exposure allows the berries to achieve superb ripeness. Counterintuitively, this warm appellation has excelled in sunny 2020. This has all the gravitas of a Grand Cru, generously rich, with silky, suave tannins giving wonderful balance. This was a joy to sample; I only wish I could have had more!

  • Neal Martin, December 2021, Score: 93-95

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru offers dark berry fruit on the nose, touches of pressed iris petals, flint and light truffle aromas. A little surly at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine balance, gentle build in the mouth with a precise, quite saline finish. Very fine mineralite here, this is a superb Aux Brûlées. Drink 2026 - 2050

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 91-93

A highly spiced blend features notes of red and black currant, raspberry and a plethora of floral nuances along with hints of exotic tea. The relatively forward and unusually supple middle weight flavors are notably less concentrated and powerful though markedly finer and more sophisticated on the youthfully austere and lingering finale that tightens up noticeably. This needs to add depth with time in bottle. Drink 2032+

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 91-94

Ripe dense concentrated purple. A wealth of sultry dark fruit, at this stage the smoky notes don’t really show. Lightly overpowerful though with inky super concentrated cherries, quite a few tannins, and then some acidity. Black fruit and liquorice finish.

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
