Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2021

Les Castets is a stony south facing vineyard at the very end of the valley as you leave the commune of St Aubin. With aromas of fresh peach and nectarine, this has a striking line of minerality, chiselled freshness and excellent intensity. Good mid-term drinking.

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 91-93

The 2020 Saint-Aubin les Castets 1er Cru offers vivid scents of dew-speckled green apples, fresh pear and wet limestone on the nose. The taut, focused palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, but there is satisfying concentration on the finish, which is flecked with white chocolate and almond. Give this lovely Saint-Aubin a couple of years in bottle. Drink 2024 - 2042

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 17

Like a perfect golf swing, this wine hits the flavour straight down the middle, and while there is little fanfare apart from this accuracy, it is a perfectly decent wine with a nice finish and keen acidity, which will keep it alive for a good few years to come.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, January 2022,
    Score: 89-91

From 15 year old vines, exposed south on white soil. Pale lemon colour, not a huge amount of bouquet though a little crisp reduction. This is a site for easy-going wines, suitable for drinking earlier. Medium bodied, with a touch of fennel or liquorice, denoting ripeness.

Producer

Domaine Marc Colin

One of our favourite Burgundy estates, Domaine Marc Colin produces year-in and year-out, some of the most balanced, expressive wines in the Côte de Beaune. Their strict principles of using only natural yeast, having a slow, cool fermentation and little ‘débourbage' (draining the juice fromits sediment) contributes to their pure, fresh flavours and impeccable balance. The domaine is now run by brothers Pierre-Yves, Damien and Joseph who took over from their semi-retired father several years back. The "changing of the guard" has had little effect on the wines. The only notable difference is less stirring of the lees in order to retain the wines' mineral undertones. And as aresult, they are as delicious and sincere as ever.

Region

Saint-Aubin

Due west of Puligny and Chassagne lies the little, picturesque village of St. Aubin. With the neighbouring village of Gamay, it produces 2/3 white wine and 1/3 red wine over 230 hectares of vines of which over 3/4 are premier cru. It was one of the last appellations created in only 1970 but has since created an excellent reputation for good value well made Burgundy that can replicatePuligny. Some of the most expressive vineyards are En Remilly and Les Murgers des Dents de Chien.
