Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2021

This 1er Cru is on the southern side of Nuits, heading to Prémeaux, and tends to have more power compared with the vineyards closer to Vosne. The steep, stony soils always produce a wine with tension, grip and mineral freshness. Full of bright red fruits, cherry and crunchy cranberry. It combines earthy minerality with great clarity of tight tannins. An uplifting line of lively freshness on the finish creates a very layered and sophisticated wine.

    Score: 91-93

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Roncière 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet with open-knit red berry fruit, briary and light ferrous scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, slightly grainy in texture, quite mineral drive with a touch of allspice and clove on the finish. Good acidity here, citric on the aftertaste. Drink 2025 - 2045

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2022,
    Score: 91-94

Elegant, pure and airy aromas speak of the essence of plum, dark raspberry and subtle spice and earth wisps. The equally elegant and refined medium weight flavors are at once sleek and detailed while displaying a gorgeous mouthfeel on the impressively lengthy finish. Like the Chaumes, this is unusually good. Drink 2032+

Intense mid purple throughout. A lifted ripe dark raspberry and more floral nose – I am looking for the characteristic garrigue but it is much more in a sweet red fruit mode. Pretty powerful, sweet cherry and strawberry, some orange blossom highlights, a little atypical. Strict finish but full of promise.

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.

Region

Nuits-Saint-Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
