Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, December 2021
Sitting close to the town on its northern side heading to Vosne Romanée, this is a particularly good vineyard. François commented that the berries were exceptionally small in 2020, with so little juice it is unsurprising that it’s so deeply concentrated and has masses of dark blackberry flavours. Extremely intense, with smooth tannins. This has a fine structure and mineral lift on the finish.

Neal Martin, December 2021,
Score: 92-94The 2020 Nuits Saints-Georges Les Bousselots 1er Cru comes from 50-year old vines on white marn soils raised in a 450-litre barrel. It has a refined floral bouquet, the oak nicely integrated with vibrant red and black fruit, hints of boysenberry jam and violet. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, crisp acidity with a harmonious and reassuringly persistent finish. One of the standouts from Legros this vintage. Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
Score: 17.5The fruit could be a little more complex, but the oak is well-managed, and there is decent texture here and so, taking the price tag into account, this is a good effort.

Domaine Francois Legros

Domaine Legros spans 6.5 hectares, covering appellations in Nuits St Georges, Chambolle Musigny and Morey St Denis. It is the epitome of a family holding: winemaker François took on the vineyards from his parents and uncle at the end of the 1980s, and in 1999 he acquired yet more vines from his father-in-law. The latest chapter now sees François joined by his two daughters, Charlotte, a graduate of the Lycée Viticole de Beaune, who manages the vineyard, and Laure, who looks after the commercial side of the business. This estate is clearly going places. It sees a proud, happy father guiding the dynamic, talented and ambitious next generation, with impressive results.
Region
Nuits Saint Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
