Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2021

The Colombier vines lie within the Maison Blanche parcel at the top of the Hermitage hill. Most of the Syrah vines used for this magnificent cuvée were planted in the 1950s. We love this 2020 offering which has a complex savouriness on the nose of smoky bacon, black olive and garrigue. With time in the glass, the sweet ripe red and black fruits unfurl with attractive liquorice nuances. There is good grip and drive on the palate thanks to the smooth ripe tannins. A bright and delicious Hermitage with a long, mineral finish.

Reticent nose and a little lighter than some Hermitages but it would be a good value introduction to the appellation. Drink 2026-2038.

    John Livingstone-Learmonth, July 2021

very dark robe; the nose is ripely filled with a good plunge of plum, blackberry fruits, sets up well. The palate is full of beans, really courses along, its unbridled nature appealing. There are flavours of coulis, soaked dark berry fruits, most tasty they are. It’s a heart on its sleeve, vivid, genuine Hermitage, carries true depth and is set up with ripe, still slightly tarry tannins. All is in place for a fruitful future; it’s bright, lingering, balanced, stylish. Drink from 2025. 2044-46.

Producer

Domaine du Colombier

This 16 hectare estate is run by brothers Florent and David Viale and produces a dark, bold interpretation of Hermitage. These wines are brawny and powerful, and have a distinctive flavour palette of black fruits, black olive tapenade, and graphite smokiness. Although grape growers for almost a century, the family only began to bottle their own wines in the early 1990s. Their wines may take a little time to come around, but will reward in the long run.

Region

Hermitage

Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
