Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2021

This delightful Crozes comes from vines grown on clay-limestone soils, just across the river from the Hermitage hill. A shining, vibrant purple, the 2020 has lashings of pure high-toned fruits: red cherry, mulberry and blackberry. There is a distinctly floral element on the nose which reveals more and more violet and rose with time in the glass as well as a touch of sweet spice, tar and wild herbs. The palate has mouth-watering purity and smooth, melting tannins which dissipate to finish on uplifting freshness.

  • JLL

    John Livingstone-Learmonth, July 2021

Full, dark red; the bouquet lurks with attractive, interesting dark berry airs, more to come. The palate gives a wholesome collection of tasty black berry fruits, accuracy in the tannins, good shape to the wine. It combines fluid appeal with clarity and expression. The balance is good, and it will show well on its fruit, with enough careful body to evolve, too. There’s lovely juice here, yum, yum. Drink 2022 - 2032-34.

Producer

Domaine du Colombier

This 16 hectare estate is run by brothers Florent and David Viale and produces a dark, bold interpretation of Hermitage. These wines are brawny and powerful, and have a distinctive flavour palette of black fruits, black olive tapenade, and graphite smokiness. Although grape growers for almost a century, the family only began to bottle their own wines in the early 1990s. Their wines may take a little time to come around, but will reward in the long run.

Region

Crozes-Hermitage

The northern Rhône's largest appellation, Crozes-Hermitage produces approximately 8 times more than its more distinguished neighbour, Hermitage. Crozes, too, has both red and whites similar to Hermitage and in many ways is very similar in style, though less concentrated and complex. Plump, silky and smooth, they are usually made for early consumption; however certain producers have been known to make Crozes-Hermitages which need to cellared for several years and can be further kept for up to a decade.
