  • Goedhuis, June 2022

A very graceful Corton Charlemagne, Pale straw with a tinge of lime. A scent of clementine and blood orange and a hint of fresh dough and newly made bread. A tremendously appealing Corton Charlemagne, in no way ostentatious, floral and refined, the racy freshness at the end, lifts the whole palate. A wine of exceptional class.

  • Neal Martin, May 2022, Score: 92-94

The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes 50% from En Charlemagne and 50% from Leongette and had been bottled the week before my visit in May 2022. Lemon thyme and white peaches on the nose; just a touch of yellow plum emerges with time. Finely focused. The palate is well balanced with a touch of lemongrass on the entry, fine depth, nice strictness considering the vintage with a long tail on the finish. Excellent.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2021, Score: 93-95

This has only just finished its fermentation, so there is a bit more gas. 5 barrels made. Clear pale lemon. Rather reductive on the nose. Interesting lemon scented minerals beneath, not yet together but fine potential. Quite sweetly scented but there is a lot happening here and the structure behind is all that it should be. Is it the oak which gives this extra sucrosity?

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long-lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations. The estate has eschewed the fashion of using new oak barrels to age the wines, preferring seasoned casks which act as an “elevage” vessel rather than imparting barrel flavours. As Alexandre says “we want our wines to taste the maximum of the true fruit and terroir flavours that nature provides us with".Read less

Region

Corton

The Grands Crus of Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay are shared between Aloxe-Corton, Ladoix Serrigny and Pernand Vergelesses. The vines for both are planted on the hillsides underneath the plateau of Corton's woodland forest. The majorityof Pinot Noir is planted in the southern and eastern sector where the soil is naturally rich with red iron clay giving additional body and power. Overall, the wines from these areas tend to be fruit forward and fleshy with a balance of round edges and fine concentration.
