Tasting Notes

  • NM

    Neal Martin, December 2021,
    Score: 91-93

There are also just two barrels of the 2020 Chambolle-Musigny Les Chatelots 1er Cru this year, though this cuvée works better than the Aux Combettes at the moment. There is more fruit concentration on the nose with attractive blackcurrant, wild strawberry and briary scents. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black cherry and strawberry fruit, fine mineralité and quite a deep, lightly grippy finish. Very fine. Drink 2024 - 2038

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2022,
    Score: 89-92

A perfumed and airy nose features the cool essence of red raspberry, rose petal, plum and subtle spice wisps. There is excellent intensity to the solidly concentrated medium weight flavors that are shaped by slightly raspy tannins on the firm and moderately austere finale. This is an impressive if decidedly atypical Chatelots. Drink: 2028+

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 18.5

This is a more flattering style with a little more harmony and silkiness than Aux Beaux Bruns. While I don’t necessarily prefer it to the previous wine, it is certainly easier to understand and a little more forward. There is so much elegance and enjoyment to be found in these wines.

  • JAM

    Jasper Morris MW, December 2021,
    Score: 92-94

Only the 80 year old vines have been included. The young from 40 years are in the Chambolle as the fruit was intrinsically less well balanced. A clear pure deep purple colour. Rich and juicy dark raspberry fruit on the nose. Excellent intensity of fresh cherry fruit, not too powerful, good acidity and super length. Very successful.

Producer

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod

Exquisitely pure, ethereal, and terroir-driven, Ghislaine’s wines also have wonderful mineral raciness. The domaine was originally created by Marcel Noëllat, Ghislaine’s maternal grandfather. After attending viticultural college in Beaune in the 1980s, she began assisting her father, Gaston Barthod, at the family domaine. Her straightforward, no-nonsense approach helped introduce a sorting table, extended lees contact, a gentle cold soak before fermentation, and domaine bottling. All this enabled greater control over the quality of fruit, texture of tannins, and purity of flavours. The results have been year upon year of magical masterpieces from Chambolle Musigny. Along with her partner Louis Boillot, today she is joined in the vineyard and cellar by their son, Clément.

Region

Chambolle-Musigny

The wines of Chambolle Musigny are like no other. They can be superbly delicate, yet mindblowingly complex. Of all the northern Burgundy appellations, they are the most ethereal, and as a result the most feminine. Most of the Chambolle Musigny vineyard area is encompassed in its Village and Premier Cru appellations including the robust Beaux Bruns, the splendidly mineral Le Cras and the poised yet powerful Les Amoureuses. It produces only two Grand Crus - the round and rich Bonnes Mares which it shares with Morey St. Dénis, as well as what could be described as the Stradivarius of grand crus, Musigny.
