Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, November 2021

The domaine’s most important 1er Cru covering just under 5 hectares with the fruit coming from four different locations and vines aged between 18 and 45 years. Floral on the nose, reminiscent of vine flowers and lily. It starts with a steely intensity and then opens out on the palate with a touch of orange zest and lemon peel, always subtle and beautifully pure. Classical in every way.

  • BURG

    Burghound, October 2021,
    Score: 91-94

A cool, pure and airy nose features notes of white flowers, pear, passion fruit, quinine and a very subtle application of wood. The juicy and fleshy medium-bodied flavors are more concentrated and bigger with good minerality and powerful on the complex, long and well-balanced finale. This consistently fine wine is potentially outstanding and just in need of a few years of cellaring. Sweet spot Outstanding. Drink 2026+

  • DC

    Decanter, December 2021,
    Score: 92

Understated power is evident on the nose. Initially quite reticent, this unfurls with more aeration, developing toasty, spicy characters from maturation in older wood. Lemon and lime zest on the palate keeps everything fresh. A classy Mont de Milieu which will age well for at least three to four years.

  • MJ

    Matthew Jukes, January 2022,
    Score: 17+

A little more serious and certainly a more balanced wine than the Montmains, this is a reasonably structured Premier Cru with a hard edge to the finish, and it will require a year or two to relax. Decent and accurate, this is a good honest wine.

Producer

Domaine Pinson Freres

The Pinson family vie with the Droins as one of the oldest in the town, with documents showing their presence back in 1640, while 1880 shows the first records of Louis Pinson selling bottles of their wine under the family label. It is now run by brothers Christophe and Laurent, joined by Laurent’s daughter, Charlène. The family team oversee 12 hectares of vineyards, including 2.5 hectares of Les Clos and 4.75 hectares of Mont de Milieu, from which they make extraordinarily fine and classical Chablis. They like to use oak barrels for maturation, although the influence of new oak is only ever a gentle whisper in the background of their steely wines. Their wines consistently show the raciness and elegance of fine Chablis.

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
