Tasting Notes

  • NM

    Neal Martin, May 2021,
    Score: 89-91

The 2020 Chasse-Spleen offers attractive wild strawberry, blackberry and rose petal scents on the nose, which is well defined and very cohesive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, a smooth texture and cedar and leather notes infusing the red fruit. I am just seeking a little more backbone and grip on the finish of this Chasse-Spleen, although it should still give 15–20 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2027 - 2042

    Antonio Galloni, June 2021,
    Score: 88-90

The 2020 Chasse-Spleen is plump, juicy and easy to like. Ripe red cherry, plum, spice and lavender all meld together in this soft, easygoing Moulis. Not hugely complex, but irresistibly delicious. Drink 2025 - 2035

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, April 2021,
    Score: 90-92

49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 6.5% Petit Verdot, 2.5% Cabernet Franc A bright and lively wine expressing fresh red fruits aromas. On the palate it has a strict intensity, showing the strength and concentration of the Cabernet Sauvignon before leading into some sweet fleshy Merlot plum fruit flavours unfolding on the finish. Youthful and direct, this will benefit from a period of bottle maturation.

  • JS

    James Suckling, April 2021,
    Score: 94-95

A beautifully constructed young Bordeaux with blackberry, walnut, nutmeg, dried herb and bark. Full-bodied with round, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish.

  • WCI

    Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021,
    Score: 88-90

Tobacco, herbs, flowers and red fruits combine on the nose. On the medium-bodied palate, this classic styled wine delivers bright, fresh red fruits, soft tannins and a crisp, almost crunchy red berry.

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, April 2021,
    Score: 16+

Deep cherry red. Lovely mix of aromas: cassis, cassis leaf and a slightly sweeter damson, plus dark chocolate. Scented and open for an unfinished wine. Firm, chewy Moulis tannins but all in harmony with the fruit, and sufficient freshness to balance. A complete wine that certainly needs time. (JH) 13.5% Drink 2028 – 2035

Producer

Château Chasse-Spleen

For many years Château Chasse-Spleen was undervalued. Though its official classification is Cru Bourgeois, many specialists believe that Chasse-Spleen equals a third or fourth growth in quality.

Region

Moulis

Moulis is an appellation in the south of the Haut-Médoc in Bordeaux. There are many different soil types, including clay, gravel and limestone, which results in a variety of wine styles. Its wines offer good value for money and are generally well structured, often with some of the perfume of Margaux to the east.
