Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, May 2021,
    Score: 93-95

A very exuberant expression of cassis, black cherry and fresh vanilla pod showing off a gloss of new oak. This is a wine unashamedly confident in itself, hugely concentrated in fruit and flavour. The tannic power sits firmly in the middle. A wine both ripe and firm having excellent length and built to age.

  • NM

    Neal Martin, May 2021,
    Score: 93-95

The 2020 Batailley is quintessential Pauillac on the nose of very focused black fruit infused with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Classic in style, this is lightly spiced, showing impressive depth toward the finish. This estate has enjoyed a good run of form in recent years and this 2020 continues that trend. If you love the style of Batailley, you will love this. Drink 2028 - 2055

  • AG

    Antonio Galloni, June 2021,
    Score: 88-90

The 2020 Batailley is a potent, rustic Pauillac with huge tannins that clamp down on the mid-palate. Super-ripe black cherry fruit pushes through as the 2020 struggles to open. Today the aromatics are muted while the fruit profile and tannins suggest summer heat was a challenge. Drink 2030 - 2045

  • WA

    Wine Advocate, May 2021,
    Score: 89-91

The 2020 Batailley is composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, aging for 12-14 months in French oak barrels, 60% new. The alcohol is 13.5%. Deep purple-black in color, it offers up notes of fresh blackberries, kirsch and cassis, leading to nuances of pencil shavings, dried Mediterranean herbs and fertile loam. The medium-bodied palate has well-managed, lightly chewy tannins with just enough freshness and straightforward black fruits, finishing with an herbal lift. Drink 2024-2037

  • JS

    James Suckling, April 2021,
    Score: 94-95

This is classically structured with a wonderful finish of extremely polished tannins and an ultra long finish. So much blackcurrant, spice and cedar. Seamless. 70% cabernet sauvignon and 26% merlot, the rest cabernet franc and petit verdot.

  • DC

    Decanter, May 2021,
    Score: 94

Takes its time to unroll then shows sweetness to the black cherry and brambled blackberries fruits, followed by cigar, pencil lead and crushed stone. This is signature Batailley in that it has that essence-of-Pauillac feel. A delicious wine, such a great great drinking claret, really one to look out for in this vintage; already looking forward to drinking this in 10 years time. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 60% new oak. A yield of 42hl/ha. (JA)

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, April 2021,
    Score: 17

Dark fruit with cassis notes and a graphite edge. Fine attack, juicy and refreshing but backed by a firmness of structure behind. Solid, subdued and distinctly Pauillac. Still relative value. (JL) Drink 2028 – 2040

  • WCI

    Wine Cellar Insider, May 2021,
    Score: 93-95

Deep in color, the wine opens quickly with aromas of tobacco leaf, spicy currants, cedar, flowers, cigar box and blackberries. Full-bodied, round, concentrated and with ripe, polished, creamy tannins, the wine finishes with spicy, red berries, savory herbs and a refreshing spearmint note. Give this at least 8 years in the cellar and enjoy it over the following 2-3 decades.

Château Batailley

Known historically as one of the "forgotten" châteaux of the Médoc, Château Batailley is also one with great potential. Owned by the Castéja family, Batailley has been managed by Borie-Manoux, a leading Bordelais négociant, since the 1960s. For many years it was not traded amongst traditional Bordeaux circles which contributed to its lesser known stature. This has changed only over the past couple of years. For some time now, Château Batailley has represented one of the best values in Bordeaux. Traditional and stylish, it often embodies the quintessential Pauillac spirit offering distinguished aromas of cedar box, and cassis enveloped in a finely structured yet fresh palate.

Region

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
