  • Goedhuis, July 2023

A blend of 60% Malbec with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, Caro 2020 brilliantly combines the signature grape varieties of Catena and Château Lafite Rothschild. The latter lends ripe fruit of cassis and a distinctly graphite edge, with Malbec providing mouth-watering red plum and sweet, juicy bramble. This sumptuous sweetness of fruit is carried through on the palate, where 20% new oak adds delicate, beautifully judged spice and freshly ground coffee notes, and the chalky tannins are cradled by a bright line of acidity. Elegant, complex and pure, this will only get better over time. Drink 2023-2037

  • James Suckling, April 2023, Score: 94

Deep and ripe nose with plenty of ripe blackberries, cedar and black truffles. A hint of black pepper, too. Plush and generous on the palate with plenty of sweet fruit. Tannins are really tight and compact with a long, focused finish. Has the warm-vintage ripeness but retains freshness.

  • Tim Atkin, April 2023, Score: 97+

The 2020 Caro uses fruit from three Uco Valley sub-regions - Gualtallary, Paraje Altamira and San Pablo - and is a blend of Malbec with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Lightly wooded in 20% new oak, this shows no sign of the heat of the 2020 vintage. Wonderfully scented and intense, with glossy tannins, cassis, bramble and coffee bean flavours, tangy minerality and a long, tapering finish. Drink 2024-2035.

The idea of forming a partnership between Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite and the prestigious Argentinian wine family, Catena, was born in 1999. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and enhance the alliance between the signature grape of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Work began in 1999 to produce Bodegas CARO’s first vintage in 2000. The success of the early vintages resulted in the creation of another wine in 2003, Amancaya, which similarly to its older brother is based on a harmonious balance of Argentinian identity and Bordeaux style. Bodegas CARO later decided to celebrate the grape variety for which Argentina’s vineyards are famous by launching a pure Malbec, Aruma, in 2010. The most recent addition to the esteemed portfolio has been Petit Caro. Working with a similar blend to Amancaya, sourced from only the best plots and given extra time in oak for a beautiful smoky depth of flavour. The Bodegas CARO winery, set in the heart of Mendoza, serves as the anchor of the CARO project. The renovation of the historic building and gardens in order to expand the winery and open the Bodega to the outside has brought the final touch to the original project.Read less

Region

Mendoza

Mendoza is the largest viticultural region in Argentina, located in the west of Argentina around the city of the same name. The region accounts for more than two-thirds of the country's total wineproduction, which focuses on red wine production. Malbec is the most important grape variety but Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc, among many others, are also grown. Central Mendoza has the longest tradition for fine wine production as the climate is temperate and the soils are unusually gravelly for Argentina as elsewhere in Mendoza soils are typically alluvial and sandy.
