Goedhuis, October 2021
50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 20% Merlot, 10% Sangiovese. With its core of dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant, the Bolgheri Rosso, bearing many of the hallmarks of the Grattamacco, is also elegant and full with fresh balsamic notes that come from the Sangiovese grape. Dense and powerful wine with ripe tannins, this juicy and rich 2020 is a really lovely example and certainly punches way above its ‘entry level’ status.

Situated only a stone’s throw from Ornellaia and Sassicaia, Grattamacco has become one of the top releases from Bolgheri in recent vintages regularly outscoring its illustrious neighbours. Established in 1977 Grattamacco is Bolgheri’s second oldest estate after Tenuta San Guido. In 2002 it was purchased by Mario Iris and Claudio Tipa, owners of the iconic Brunello, Poggio di Sotto, and their investment has transformed the fortunes here. Grattamacco’s 25 hectares of steep, hilly vineyards sit at an altitude of 150 metres with the Mediterranean visible from the winery only a mile away. The vines are perfectly exposed to the microclimate here which provides an excellent balance of warm daytime temperatures and cool evenings.Read less

Region
Bolgheri
The medieval town of Bolgheri was originally made famous by the poet Giosuè Carducci who wrote about the stunning Cypress Avenue, a breathtaking and magical three mile long corridor of trees leading up to the entrance to the village. Swept away to the coastal and most westerly area of Tuscany, Bolgheri has become synonymous with wines known as ‘Super Tuscans'. Composed of classic Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (intermixed with the occasional Sangiovese), the Super Tuscans began as mere experimentation in the 1960s and 70s. These international French varieties flourished in Bolgheri's warm, yet maritime climate which resulted in unexpected success and reknown. It is here that one finds such famous names as Ornellaia, Tignanello and Sassicaia.
