Tasting Notes

Goedhuis, December 2020
The combination of south facing slopes and a high proportion of clay in the soils contributes to a very expressive 2019. With flavours of damsons and sloes, this is deeply intense showing a hint of rustic muscle. There is a distinctive texture thanks to the use of some whole bunches and a firm, gorgeously nuanced finish.

Neal Martin, December 2020,
Score: 89-91The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Lavières 1er Cru shows evident whole bunch on the nose that slightly occludes the terroir expression, yet it is fresh and transparent. The palate is medium-bodied with a crisp raspberry and blackberry opening. Leafy red fruit combines with a touch of graphite toward the finish. A nimble Savigny with a peppery finish. Should drink well over the next decade. Drink 2022 - 2032

Jasper Morris MW, December 2020,
Score: 88-91A little more purple in the colour and the fruit digs down deeper. Fully ripe cherry , but without the easy sucrosity, which shows over-ripeness. Quite complex, a little reductive touch, middleweight with a balanced finish. 3 stars

Producer
Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.
Region
Savigny-lès-Beaune
The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
