  • Goedhuis, December 2020

La Garenne sits on the higher slopes of Puligny and produces a remarkably harmonious wine. Golden in colour, this is full of captivatingly exotic fruits. A touch of mango and guava, with some fresh Guernsey cream is cut through by a bright acidity. Deliciously rich and very stylish, this is the most impressive Sauzet Garenne I have tasted for many years. Superb.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 91-93

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet La Garenne 1er Cru, from a single plot at the top of the slope close to Hameau de Blagny, has an austere, granitic bouquet that demands coaxing from the glass. The palate is well balanced with a fine edginess on the entry, concentrated with good density, notes of tangy marmalade and spices coming through on the expressive finish. This is a lovely La Garenne that should age with style. 2023-2040

  • Wine Advocate, Score: 91

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne exhibits aromas of pear, white flowers, fresh peach, mint and praline. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, it's rich and textural, with succulent acids and a gourmand, generous profile. As usual, this is a cuvée produced with purchased grapes from a parcel farmed and harvested by the Sauzet team. Drink 2022-2038. William Kelly

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2020, Score: 91-93

Made from purchased grapes, but team Sauzet run the vineyards. Mid yellow colour. Rich firm concentrated fruit on the nose, lively and powerful yellow fruit with good acidity behind. Concentrated yes, but not soft this year. Little touch of bacon fat behind. Good length. 4 stars

Region

Puligny Montrachet

Puligny Montrachet is known as the most delicate of the white wine appellations south of Beaune. Its wines tend to be linear and mineral offering delicate floral and orchard fruit aromatics. Its village and premier cru vineyard area total slightly over 200 hectares but almost half of them are premier cru making them one of the highest proportions of quality vineyards in the Côte de Beaune. Several grand cru vineyards are present, the most notable being Le Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachetwhich it shares with neighbouring Chassagne, but it does have the extraordinary Chevalier Montrachet and the tiny Bienvenues Bâtard Montrachet all to itself. There are a handful of red wines grown, but they tend to be quite light and need to be drunk in their youth.
