Jasper Morris MW, December 2020, Score: 89-92
Not yet racked. The vineyard is on the edge of three communes (Pernand, Aloxe, Savigny) with red clay, limestone and marl. The nose is all Pernand , but there is a bit more weight to it. Purple in colour and in the nature of the dark raspberry fruit. Gorgeous texture, still fully ripe , but this is in no way cloying. Open for business early and very agreeable, plus persistent too. 4 stars
Producer
Domaine Chandon de Briailles
The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.
Region
Pernand Vergelesses
With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
