Goedhuis, December 2020
A high proportion of whole cluster vinification gives a tell-tale scent of appealing fresh wild alpine strawberries. Charming and harmonious, rich, full fruit flavours unfold on the palate, underpinned by firm grainy tannins. Great drive and energy on the finish.

Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 90-92
The 2019 Pernand-Vergelesses Ile de Vergelesses 1er Cru was more muted on the nose, dark berry fruit mingling with autumn leaves and earthy notes. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins on the entry. This has more substance than the preceding Savigny Les Lavières, and more grip, with subtle mushroom notes combining with red fruit on the finish. This should drink well over the next 10–12 years. Jasper Morris MW, December 2020, Score: 90-93
Not yet racked. Rich purple colour and significant weight to the nose, some liquorice touches to add to the dark raspberry, there’s a genuine mineral fresh touch to this over and above the acidity. Very good. All whole bunch except a few young vines. 4 stars
Producer
Domaine Chandon de Briailles
The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.
Region
Pernand Vergelesses
With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
