Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, December 2020
This Premier Cru is on the southern side of Nuits heading to Prémeaux and thus tends to have more power compared with the vineyards closer to Vosne. The steep, stony soils always produce a wine with tension, grip and mineral freshness. Absolutely singing when tasted from barrel. With deep black forest fruits, this is luscious, rich and generous. A characteristic structured firmness distinguishes the finish.

Neal Martin, December 2020,
Score: 91-93The 2019 Nuits Saint-Georges Roncière 1er Cru has a very well-defined, effortless bouquet of dark berry fruit, plus touches of pressed iris and freshly pitted black olives. The medium-bodied palate is smooth and silky, with supple tannins and perfectly judged acidity. Very harmonious. Grivot’s trademark sorbet-like freshness is on display on the long finish. Very sensual. Drink 2024 - 2042

Jasper Morris MW, November 2020,
Score: 91-94Rich deep and even crimson purple. Comes across as dark and meaty after Les Rouges. Etienne thinks it has a similar profile of limestone soil. Properly rich with a drier chalky finish, good acidity. Robust and will take time. Etienne stresses the underlying freshness, given the ripeness. 4 Star

Domaine Etienne Grivot (formerly Jean Grivot)

One of the most famous names in Vosne Romanée, Domaine Grivot dates back to the nineteenth century. Over the years and marriages, the domaine grew to include vineyards in notable appellations such as Clos de Vougeot, Echézeaux and Richebourg. Etienne, the fifth generation of the family to run the estate, returned to Burgundy from work experience in California in the 1980s. He eventually took over from his father completely in 1990. Over time and through experience, Etienne has created his own style of wine, which many tasters consider to be growing in elegance. The wines remain powerful and rich, true vins de garde, which usually need several years of cellaring to soften and develop. Those patient enough to wait know that the wines of Etienne Grivot are exceptional. In 2012 his children Mathilde and Hubert joined him at the family domaine, and the three share a united vision. It is a harmonious and collaborative family team. They eschew the trend for analysing every drop of juice, and pay much more attention to the vegetative cycle of their vines. The year’s weather conditions will dictate how the team handles the grapes in the cellar far more than the complex chemical analyses which comes back from the lab.
Region
Nuits Saint Georges
The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
