The Luciano Sandrone 2019 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore is a beautiful expression of this mighty red grape from the north of Italy. The Valmaggiore vineyard in Roero offers a spicy and accessible interpretation with plenty of wild cherry and blue flower. This vintage also offers pretty layer of crushed white peppercorn. You get terrific complexity and a very food-friendly ensemble at a competitive price. Drink 2021 - 2033.

Producer

Luciano Sandrone

One of the most respected and admired names in Piedmont, Luciano Sandrone has been making exceptional wines for over 40 years. Beginning with a modest plot in Cannubi Boschis in 1978, his now 20-hectare estate produces some of the world’s best Barolos. Throughout its history, this hallowed estate has always remained true to the DNA of their vineyards; they practice minimal intervention and, unlike many other winemakers in the region, use smaller old French oak barrels to deliver precision and preserve the purity and aromatics of the fruit. Many consider Luciano to be a visionary and his children, Luca and Barbara, are now working alongside him to maintain their father’s philosophy. A favourite amongst top wine critics, Sandrone’s wines are not to be missed.

Region

Piedmont

Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
