Goedhuis, February 2021
The Coddington is a single vineyard wine which shows impressive weight and texture. The layers of ripe stone fruits, lime and white flowers are beautifully integrated, and the finish is long and mineral. Delicious.
Vinous, February 2021,
This Chardonnay is expansive, filling the mouth with its subtle flavors yet retaining a sense of lightness. Its girth is wrapped in a firm belt of acidity that holds everything into a streamlined whole. Chardonnay is a non-aromatic variety and the fine aromas of nectarine and oatmeal combine with a barrel-derived smoky note on the drawn-out finish.
Jancis Robinson, February 2021,
Quite broad on the nose and more obviously fruity (rather than savoury) than the Estate Chardonnay 2019, though it will obviously take on more subtlety with time. Pretty impressive finish to the palate, on which mandarin and passion-fruit flavours reverberate.
Producer Note, February 2021
The single-vineyard Coddington wine is strongly coloured and richly ripe in the yellow peach and apricot spectrum, with a background of toasted oak and hazelnut. It is the biggest style in our range, and satisfyingly rich as such, but also nicely balanced with its acidity.
Kumeu River is one the longest established and most recognised producers in New Zealand. Founded in 1944 by Mick Brajkovich, a Croatian immigrant, it was one of the early pioneers in Auckland that helped establish the country as an excellent wine producing area. Today it is the third and second generations who work the 30 hectares of vines planted on clay and limestone soils. Winemaker Michael Brajkovich, who was also New Zealand’s first Master of Wine, harvests all the grapes by hand and uses traditional Burgundian methods such as barrel fermentation. Kumeu River's Chardonnays have won many accolades the world over. From their entry level Chardonnay to their single vineyard wines, they represent fantastic value for money. The single vineyard wines even been mistaken by top critics for some very smart Meursaults, Chassagnes and Pulignys, yet cost a fraction of the price.
