Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, October 2020

Selected from the mid slopes of the appellation at 250 metres altitude, this is a blend of old vines (70 years) with 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah and Cinsault coplanted, and 5% Clairette. This reveals dark blackberry and bramble fruits on the nose while on the palate the initial juicy fruits give way to ripe, chalky tannins so typical of Gigondas. Lots of personality here and excellent, long flavours.

    Score: 92-94+

More black currants, blueberries, peppery garrigue, licorice and mineral notes define the 2019 Gigondas Les Racines and it’s another beautifully rich, layered, textured barrel sample from this estate that’s going to benefit from short term cellaring.

Producer

Domaine les Pallières

Just outside the village of Gigondas in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail, Domaine Les Pallieres is one of the oldest wine producers of the Southern Rhone. The estate is run by the Brunier family of Vieux Telegraphe fame and Kermit Lynch, one of America’s most respected wine merchants, who have invested heavily and brought this once great estate back on track. They produce two distinct lieux-dits: "Terasse du Diable" made from high-altitude wines characterised by structure and minerality and "Les Racines" made from the oldest vines around the winery which express freshness and intense fruit.

Region

Gigondas

An area for red and rosé wines Gigondas has been an appellation in its own right since 1971. Though they can occasionally be more rustic, the reds are often considered a miniature version of Châteauneuf du Pape. Part of this may have to do with the same limited yield restrictions and minimum alcoholic strength (12.5 %), but they also share some of the same varieties including Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Certain bottlings can be approached shortly after release, but many benefit from several years of cellaring. Like Châteauneuf du Pâpe, aged bottles of Gigondas take on appealing gamey and forest floor aromatics which make them particularly enjoyable with roast meats.
