This centrally located Premier Cru is renowned for the generous style of its wines. The mix of sweet fruit compote and brambles makes this instantly gratifying. The ripe fruit is underpinned by an earthy rustic core, providing additional nuance and complexity. Striking and long, with mid-term drinking potential.
This is a substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine with 12 hectares that include some of the finest premiers and grands crus in the village. Previously Chantal Tortochot’s father Gabriel sold most of his fruit to the famous Beaune négociant, Joseph Drouhin. Since taking over in 2001 Chantal has been carefully and surely building the domaine’s name and reputation around the world. In 2013 the estate became organically certified. Chantal favours early bottling to capture the fruit purity.
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
