Decanter, October 2020, Score: 97
Fourrier's 0.89ha of Clos St. Jacques next to the Rousseau parcel was planted in 1910 and yields miniscule quantities of very small berries. The bunches are destemmed and very slowly macerate - with mostly whole grapes - before a fermentation with gentle punching down by hand. The wines are aged two winters in cask (20% new). The result shows an exquisite definition, a lovely, supple red fruit character, plenty of tannin and freshness, plus an impressive depth of flavour. Drink 2029-2049. Charles Curtis MW.

Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 19.5++
There is always a different approach on the palate with CSJ and it doesn’t follow Fourrier, Fourrier follows it. CSJ makes itself to its own rules and Fourrier merely adds curlicues and flourishes and, in 2019, this is a delectable wine. Every inch a superstar and with a huge run ahead of it, this is a lesson in allowing expression of terroir to underpin the honesty, integrity and accuracy of a great wine.

Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 95-98
The vines in the lower part date to 1955, those in the upper part 1910, another example of the exceptional vine heritage chez Fourrier. The 2019 Clos St-Jacques vieille vigne is another masterpiece in all departments, beginning with a deep, dark, crimson colour. It is brilliantly classy in bouquet, all is there, a little more in dark fruit than red, builds complexity the further back, a touch of liquorice. Clearly very fine and has retained freshness. 5 Star

He had learned from the best, most notably the late Henri Jayer of Vosne Romanée and Domaine Drouhin in the Willamette Valley in Oregon with whom he did his formative training. He is a keen participant in the growing trend towards minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery. The domaine has a remarkable array of very old vines, many having been planted between the wars. The Fourrier wines are pure and balanced.Read less

Region
Gevrey Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
