  • Goedhuis, November 2020

This Premier Cru owes its name to the Prior of the Abbaye de Cluny. The monastery historically owned all the great Gevrey Chambertin vineyards. The high proportion of clay was a major benefit during the drier summer months this year and creates a wine with some brooding power. Wild savoury fruit aromas, with a smattering of mocha and spice. A tightly structured wine, with a firm grip of fruit. Great intensity and lots of staying power.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 89-91

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Prieur 1er Cru has good intensity on the nose of fresh red berry fruit, the oak here nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, with orange sorbet and Chinese five-spice infusing the black fruit. There is good depth and tension and quite an elegant yet structured finish. This is a fine Clos Prieur, even if it is not the best that I encountered during my Burgundy tastings. Give it 3–5 years in bottle. Drink 2024 - 2038

  • Burghound, April 2021, Score: 92

Here the pretty and fresh fruit derives more from the red side of the spectrum and is laced with plenty of spice, forest floor and violet whiffs. The sleek, intense and beautifully delineated middle weight flavors possess focused power and a subtle bead of minerality on the balanced, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is also lovely and is pretty much textbook Clos Prieur. Outstanding. Drink 2031+

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 89-92

More prominent wood frames the liqueur-like aromas of cassis and spice that are also relatively floral in character. The is better density to the slightly sleeker medium-bodied flavors that possess lovely detail on the lightly mineral suffused finish. Drink: 2025+

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2020, Score: 90-93

30% Whole Bunch Fermentation; 60% new wood. Darker crimson and with a little bit of toast. Perhaps some salted caramel too. Dark red fruit behind with the sweeter finish of the vintage, a little less acidity than some. 3 Star

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
